I grew up on the water – many of my friends and family members are sailors. In college I had a great opportunity to participate in a sail training program with Sea Education Association which I would strongly recommend to anyone looking to grow their leadership skills and see the world. Safety at sea is a big deal – the ocean is a dangerous and inhospitable place. Last week 64 students and staff members aboard the Concordia (a Canadian based sail training vessel) faced the worst the sea can send and, due to proper training, quick thinking, great leadership and functioning safety gear, lived to tell about it.

15 minutes. That’s how long they had to get 64 people into lifeboats before their boat went to the bottom. 15 minutes in a howling gale with (I assume) a fair amount of stress and panic. Never underestimate the value of proper training and preparation. My hats off to the students and staff for their courage under pressure.
